The Past Perfect Tense

* Formation : had + past participle form of the verb.

* Usage : an action that was completed before another past action.

* Words used with the tense : after - before - when - etc.

    N.B._ AFTER is followed by past perfect and the main verb in the past simple.

   _ BEFORE is followed by past simple and the main verb in the past perfect.

Examples

* Put in the correct tense of the given verb:

1- She ( learn ) dancing before she ( leave ) for Europe.

* She had learnt dancing before she left for Europe.

2- After we ( chat ) for a little time, we ( play ) Chess.

* After we had chatted for a little time, we played chess.

3- When we ( finish ) dinner, we ( go ) into the smoking room.

* When we had finished dinner, we went into the smoking room.

4- I ( give ) my wife the present which I ( buy ) for her.

  *I gave my wife the present which I had bought for her.

5- I already ( get ) home before it ( begin ) to rain.

* I had already got home before it began to rain.

6- This morning, I ( meet ) a friend that I ( not see ) for years.

* This morning, I met a friend that I hadn't seen for years.

7- He ( tell ) me all about her after she ( leave ).

* He told me all about her after she had left.

8- She ( thank ) me for what I ( do ) for her.

* She thanked me for what I had done for her.

9- After she ( go away), I ( feel ) lonesome.

* After she had gone away, I felt lonesome.

 10- After I ( hear ) her story. I ( believe ) her.

    * After I had heard her story, I believed her.

 11- I ( hurry ) to see my friend as soon as I ( hear ) the news.

* I hurried to see my friend as soon as I had heard the news.
