Evidence supports the importance of family participation in the achievement

of the children. Getting parents and other significant adults involved in school

activities improves young people’s attitudes towards school and contributes to their

overall school success. Involved parents have children with more positive attitudes

towards school and higher aspirations for the future.

Family involvement tends to decrease as children get older. For the most

part, parents of elementary-age children control the environment and resources

available to their children and have a great influence on them through the decisions

and choices they make. Families continue to influence young people even as they

begin to exercise their own independence in middle and high school, although this

influence is not that obvious or direct. The changing relationship between families

and their older children requires adjustments in expectations throughout the school

years as students take on more responsibility for decision making.

6- Read the following passage, the, answer the questions:        (5 marks)

The plight of the homeless is a pressing problem facing communities. It is

difficult to estimate how many people are homeless because the number depends on

how the homeless are defined. There are street people - those who sleep in bus

stations, parks, and other areas. Many of these people are youthful runaways. There

are also the sheltered homeless - those who sleep in government-funded or private

shelters. While street people are often single, the sheltered homeless include

numerous families with children. Some cities have attempted to criminalize

homelessness outlawing sleeping on park benches and sidewalks. In other cities,

police sweeps remove the homeless.

Because there is so much disagreement about the number of the homeless, the

reasons for homelessness, and the possible cures for the problem, there has been no

consistent remedial policy to solve this problem. Whatever policies adopted, they are

sometimes attacked by one group or another.

A. Answer the following questions:

1. Suggest a suitable title to the passage.
